The Hakea Walk Trail is a spectacular, sometimes rugged walk along the eastern coastline of the Fitzgerald River National Park. Your walk is a journey through billions of years of geological history, traversing outstanding features including a unique section of limestone karst cliff lines, as well as alternating between ancient wave-cut platforms, about 90m above current sea level, and much more recently formed beaches. These variations in the geology of the land forms have resulted in different soil types, which lead to variations in the vegetation and associated flora and fauna. The native fauna in this area is mainly nocturnal, the walk does provide many opportunities to sight sea birds, marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and seals.
The trail starts at Cave Point car park and finishes some 23 km to the west near Quoin Head, on the edge of the park’s central wilderness. To complete the entire length of the trail the walk is 46.8 kms from point to point and return. Hikers should allow 2 days to complete the 12-14 hour walk. However, the walk can be undertaken in sections and provides the option for half-day to full day walks.
This is a class 4 hiking trail, requiring a good level of fitness and bushwalking experience. Before setting out and hikers should ensure they have sturdy boots, appropriate clothing for the conditions, sun protection and plenty of water. There are also beach sections of the trail that may be affected by high tides, so it is advisable to check tide conditions before commencing these sections of the walks.  There are no toilet facilities until you reach Whalebone Creek Campground so please make use of the facilities at Hamersley Inlet or Cave Point prior to commencing your walk.
The trail is marked and follows the coast along sandy beaches, across vegetated dunes and rocky ridges. Some surfaces may be unstable and slippery. Along the way you will find occasional rest areas with seats or platforms. These are mostly located at the viewpoints.
Half Day Walks
- Cave Point to West Beach Headland, 6.6km return – allow 2 to 3 hours
- Hamersley Inlet Carpark to Tamala Karst Lookout, 7km return – allow 2 to 3 hours
Full Day Walks
- Cave Point to Edwards Point Step, 13.8km return – allow 5 to 6 hours
- Hamersley Inlet to Whalebone Point and Whalebone Creek Campground, 17.6km return – allow 6 to 7 hours
Two Day Walk
- Cave Point to Quoin Head, 46.8km return – allow 12 to 14 hours actual walking depending on departure point.  There are camping facilities at Whalebone Creek
Once at Quoin Head visit Quoin Head beach and headland. The descent is via a steep 4WD track down to the beach and small recreation area. Remember before descending that you will need to allow 2hours from here to return to Whalebone Creek Campground.
